Father Bruno Kaniarakath CMI, who is well known among his devotees as Atmavachan (Spirit-Filled Father), was born on 20th November 1894 at Ramapuram, Kerala. Born as the fourth son of Augustine and Eliamma Kaniarakath and was baptized as Devasia. Father Bruno (Devasia) was inspired by his elder classmate Blessed Kunjachan Thevarparampil of Ramapuram, during his primary school days at Ramapuram. After the primary school, he joined St. Ephrem’s School, Mannanam, and stayed in the boarding attached to the school while attending the senior secondary school at St. Ephrem’s. In an interview with Fr. Joseph Sylvester Thekkumkal CMI, Fr. Bruno said that when he was residing in the boarding school, he saw the seminarians and desired to be one like them. He continued saying that he had the desire to become a religious priest from the early childhood. In the words of Father Bruno, he walked the silent, long and arduous path that led to his divine inheritance and complete union with God.
After his school studies, father Bruno (Devasia) joined the congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). He had his first profession in the CMI Congregation on 14th November 1915. Through the first profession, a person makes a rededication of his life. During his time, with the first profession in the congregation, a person adopts a new name. Thus, Devasia became Bruno Kaniarakath in the religious congregation. Moreover, through the profession, a person, out of his free will, makes three vows to God: Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, which are intended to transform one into what one has to become. Father Bruno fulfilled these vows throughout his life and committed himself before God and never failed to follow the road of his commitment, as shown by the forefathers of the CMI Congregation. St. Chavara was the first professed member of the CMI congregation. Together with St. Chavara, eleven others also made the religious profession and one among them was Father Mani Kaniarakath, the elder brother of Father Bruno’s grandfather. Fr. Mani was an inspiration to him. Father Bruno was ordained a priest on 20th May 1923.
Father Bruno’s life was packed with a variety of experiences. He was an ascetic man, which was why people called him Atmavachan (Spirit-Filled Father). Almighty God performed many miracles through this humble servant, Father Bruno, and wiped off the tears of God’s people with whom he came into contact. He was fervently involved in the pastoral activities of the Church. He was empathetically moved in action for the over-all betterment of the Dalit Christians from the different monasteries he lived. He served in the CMI monasteries/houses of Thevara, Vazhakulam, Pulinkunnnu, Karukutty, Puthuppally, Thalore, Elthurruth, Kadalundi, Muttar, Amanakara, Mutholy, Pala, Kenkeri (Bangalore), Kottayam, Poonjar, and Kurianad. Father Bruno never had Primary administrative duties, but established relationships with all whom he came across pastorally and socially.
Fr. Bruno was associated with Blessed Kunjachan from the school days on. Father Bruno had also testified about the virtuous life of Blessed Kunjachan, in the process of beatification. Finally, after many years, Father Bruno completed his sacrificial life for God at the age of 97 on 15 December, 1991. On the eve of his entry into eternal rest, he called all his community members at Kurianad Monastery and thanked them for their individual and personal good deeds that he had received. He went to his eternal joy in the early hours of 15th December 1991. His mortal remains were interred at St. Anne’s Monastery, Kurianad. Mar Joseph Pallikaparampil, the then bishop of the diocese of Pala, officiated the final part of the funeral ceremony.
Even during his life time, Fr. Bruno was considered a saintly priest by many who came into close contact with him. As a holy and saintly priest, many sought his blessings and prayers for the cure of diseases and help in difficult situations of life. His blessings and prayers were sought by many for the protection of the crops of cultivation and household animals. Gradually the fame of Fr. Bruno’s holiness and intercessory powers began to spread far and wide. School children used to seek his blessings and prayers for the success of their studies. On school day’s the tomb of Fr. Bruno at Kurianad Monastery is visited by a good number of school children. Daily many devotees are visiting the tomb in prayers and thanksgiving for the favours received. Considering the favours received by many through the intercession of Father Bruno and by the fame of his saintly life and the power of his intercession, he was declared Servant of God on 15th December 2021 by Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, the bishop of Pala. At present the beatification and canonization process, at the Eparchial level, is progressing. Reports of large number of favours received and intercessory prayers are being submitted at the tomb of the Servant of God, Fr. Bruno (Atmavachan).
ഭക്തജനം ‘ആത്മാവച്ചൻ’ എന്ന് ആദരവോടെ വിളിക്കുന്ന ദൈവദാസൻ ബ്രൂണോ കണിയാരകത്തച്ചന്റെ ജനനം 1894 നവംബർ 20-നാണ്. രാമപുരമാണ് അച്ചൻറെ ജന്മദേശം. അഗസ്റ്റിൻ-ഏലിയാമ്മ ദമ്പതിമാരുടെ നാലാമത്തെ മകനായി ജനിച്ച ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചന്റെ ജ്ഞാനസ്നാന നാമം ദൈവസ്യ എന്നായിരുന്നു. രാമപുരത്തെ ബാല്യകാല പഠനത്തിനുശേഷം മാന്നാനം സ്കൂളിൽ ചേർന്ന്‌ ദേവസ്യ പഠനം തുടർന്നു. ബോർഡിങ്ങിൽ ആയിരുന്നു താമസം. ബോർഡിങ്ങിനോട് ചേർന്നുള്ള സെമിനാരി വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ മാതൃക ജീവിതം കൊച്ചു ദേവസ്യയെ വളരെ ആകർഷിച്ചു. ഭാവിയിൽ ഒരു വൈദീകനാകാൻ ദേവസ്യ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
സ്കൂൾ പഠനം വിജയകരമായി പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ദേവസ്യ മുൻ തീരുമാനപ്രകാരം സി. എം. ഐ സഭയിൽ ചേർന്നു. ഏതാനും വർഷത്തെ പഠനത്തിനുശേഷം 1915 നവംബർ 14ന് ബ്രദർ ബ്രൂണോ എന്ന പേര് സ്വീകരിച്ച് ദേവസ്യ ആദ്യ വ്രതം ചെയ്തു. സന്യാസദീക്ഷ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്ന ഓരോ വ്യക്തിയും ഒരു പുനസൃഷ്ടി ആകുകയാണ്. പൂർണ്ണമായും ദൈവത്തിനും ദൈവജനത്തിനും ഉള്ളവനായി മാറുന്നു അവൻ സ്വമനസാ വരിക്കുന്ന അനുസരണം, ദാരിദ്ര്യം, ബ്രഹ്മചര്യം എന്നീ വ്രതങ്ങൾ അവരെ പുതിയ മനുഷ്യരാക്കുന്നു സന്യാസവ്രതം സ്വീകരിച്ച ബ്രദർ ബ്രൂണോ കലപ്പയിൽ കൈപിടിച്ച ശേഷം ഒരു നിമിഷം പോലും പിന്തിരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കിയില്ല. വിശുദ്ധ ജീവിതത്തിൽ കറ വീഴാതെ അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു. CMI സഭാ സ്ഥാപകനായ വിശുദ്ധ ചാവയച്ചനോടൊപ്പം വ്രതം ചെയ്ത പതിനൊന്നു പേരിൽ ഒരാളായ മാണി കണിയാരകത്ത് ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചൻറെ വല്യപ്പന്റെ സഹോദരനായിരുന്നു. മാണിയച്ചൻ ബ്രദർ ബ്രൂണോയുടെ വലിയൊരു ശക്തിയും പ്രചോദനവും ആയിരുന്നു. പഠനങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ബ്രദർ ബ്രൂണോ 1923 മെയ് മാസം 20ാം തീയതി കർത്താവിൻറെ പുരോഹിതനായി അഭിഷിക്തനായി.
കർത്താവിൻറെ പുരോഹിതനായ ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചൻ തന്റെ വിശുദ്ധ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗം ആരംഭിച്ചു. താപസ സമാനമായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ ജീവിതം. സന്യാസ വ്രതങ്ങൾ അത്യധികം കാർക്കശ്യത്തോടും നിഷ്‌ഠയോടും കൂടിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു പോന്നത്. അതിരാവിലെ ഉണരും. ഉണരുമ്പോൾ മുതൽ ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന ഭക്താനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങൾ രാത്രി വരെ നീണ്ടുനിന്നു. വെഞ്ചിരിപ്പിനും പ്രാർത്ഥനാ സഹായത്തിനും പ്രശ്നപരിഹാരത്തിനുമായി ധാരാളം പേർ ദിനംപ്രതി അച്ചനെ സമീപിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇതിനിടയിൽ സാധുജനങ്ങളുടെ ഭവനങ്ങൾ സന്ദർശിക്കാനും അവർക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുവാനും ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചൻ സമയം കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു. ദളിത് ക്രൈസ്തവരോട് തന്റെ മാതൃകയായ വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ട കുഞ്ഞച്ചൻ പുലർത്തിയിരുന്ന അതേ മനോഭാവം ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചനും കാണിച്ചു. ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചനെ കാണുന്നതുതന്നെ ആളുകൾക്ക് ആശ്വാസമായിരുന്നു. ആത്മാവച്ചന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം ആശ്രമങ്ങൾ എന്നും ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്നു. 68 വർഷത്തെ സമർപ്പണ ജീവിതത്തിനിടയിൽ തേവര, വാഴക്കുളം, പുളിങ്കുന്ന്, കറുകുറ്റി, പുതുപ്പള്ളി, തലോർ, എൽത്തുരുത്ത്, കടലുണ്ടി, മുട്ടാർ, അമനകര, മുത്തോലി, ധർമ്മാരാം, കെങ്കേരി( ബാംഗ്ലൂർ), പല, കോട്ടയം, പൂഞ്ഞാർ, കുര്യനാട് എന്നിങ്ങനെ 16 സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ താമസിച്ച് ദൈവസനേഹം ജനങ്ങളുമായി പങ്കുവച്ചു.
ആത്മാവച്ചന്റെ വിശുദ്ധി ജനങ്ങൾ വേഗം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. തന്മൂലം, ഒരു വിശുദ്ധനെ പോലെയാണ് ജാതിമത വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ ജനങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് പെരുമാറിയിരുന്നത്. ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചൻ വഴിയെ കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോൾ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികൾ മാത്രമല്ല അക്രൈസ്തവർ പോലും കൈകൂപ്പി വണങ്ങി നിൽക്കുമായിരുന്നു. മത്സരപരീക്ഷകൾക്കും ഇതര മത്സരങ്ങൾക്കും പോകുന്ന കുട്ടികൾ ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം വാങ്ങിയിട്ടേ പോകുമായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. അവർക്ക് നല്ല വിജയങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ദൈവത്തെ പൂജിക്കുക മനുഷ്യനെ സേവിക്കുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചന്റെ മുദ്രാവാക്യം. മരണംവരെ അദ്ദേഹം അത് തുടർന്നുപോന്നു. 1991 ഡിസംബർ 15ാം തീയതിയാണ് ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചൻ പരലോക പ്രാപ്തനായത്. ആ സമയത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം കൂര്യനാട് ആശ്രമത്തിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്നു. മരിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ തലേനാൾ ആശ്രമത്തിലെ എല്ലാവരെയും കാണാൻ ആത്മാവച്ചൻ ആഗ്രഹം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു. ഓരോരുത്തരെയും തന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് വിളിച്ച് നന്ദി പറയുകയും, എന്തെങ്കിലും വീഴ്ച തന്റെ പക്കൽ നിന്നും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ ക്ഷമിക്കണം എന്ന് അപേക്ഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അതായിരുന്നു ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചൻ എന്ന വിശുദ്ധ മനുഷ്യൻ. അച്ചന്റെ മൃതസംസ്കാര ശുശ്രൂഷകൾ അന്നത്തെ പാലാ രൂപതാധ്യക്ഷൻ മാർ. ജോസഫ് പള്ളിക്കാംപറമ്പിൽ പിതാവിൻറെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടന്നു. അത്യപൂർവ്വമായ ജനക്കൂട്ടമായിരുന്നു അന്ന് കുര്യനാട്ടിൽ. ബഹുമാനപ്പെട്ട ജെയിംസ് നരിതൂക്കിൽ അച്ചൻ നടത്തിയ ചരമ പ്രസംഗം ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായിരുന്നു.
മൃതസംസ്കാരം നടന്നതിന്റെ പിറ്റേദിവസം മുതൽ വിശ്വാസികൾ ബ്രൂണോ അച്ചൻറെ കല്ലറയിങ്കൽ പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. കുട്ടികൾ, മുതിർന്നവർ, അന്യമതസ്ഥർ എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിരവധി ആളുകൾ .ആത്മാവച്ചനെ വിശുദ്ധൻ ആക്കാനുള്ള നടപടികൾ സ്വീകരിക്കണമെന്ന് അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് മെമ്മോറാണ്ടവുമായി നാട്ടിലെ ജനങ്ങൾ പ്രിയോരായിരുന്ന ജെയിംസ് എർത്തയിൽ അച്ചനെ സമീപിച്ചു. ജെയിംസ് അച്ചൻ അപേക്ഷ പാലാ ബിഷപ്പ് മാർ ജോസഫ് കല്ലറങ്ങാട്ട് പിതാവിനെ ഏൽപ്പിച്ചു. ആവശ്യമായ പഠനങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം 2021 ഡിസംബർ 15ാം തീയതി ആത്മാവച്ചനെ ദൈവദാസനായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. ആത്മാവച്ചന്റെ കല്ലറയിങ്കൽ വന്ന്‌ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചാൽ ആത്മാവിലും ശരീരത്തിലും ഉണർവ്വ് ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് ഉറച്ചു വിശ്വസിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അകലെ നിന്നും അടുത്തുനിന്നും ആളുകൾ എത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
